Ohana: Our Native Hawaiian Heritage

In 1873, the first native Hawaiians, Kiha Kaawa, and Kahana Pukahi, were given permission from King Lunaiilo to permanently emigrate to the United States (Salt Lake City, Utah). Before this, emigration of native Hawaiians was not allowed.

Once arriving in Salt Lake City, Kiha was adopted by Mormon Missionary President George Nebeker. Therefore, in 1873, Kiha Kaawa (Nebeker) became the first native Hawaiian citizen of the United States. Kiha Kaawa is the great-grandfather of Ohana owner, Steve Winger.

SBA Mentor Protégé Program
